Fitness Social Media vs Reality

TRENDING

As social media grows, so does the amount of mirror pics, progress updates, and fitness influencers.

If you get discouraged after seeing an amazing body on social media, you are not alone.

Social media has become a stage for people to show off their bodies... which can be a good and a bad thing.

But most of the time, there are little tricks going on behind the scenes. Presenting a false reality and false expectations. Here’s what to look out for:

Social media and fitness

In fitness, social media can be great… and not so great.

The fitness side of social media can be great for connecting with new people, finding opportunities, getting feedback, and even learning a thing or two. It starts to become not so-great when there are false realities put in front of you.

If you are on social media long enough, you’ll start to see some unbelievable physiques. Maybe it’s a 15-year-old that looks like a tank, progress pictures with insane results, or even a 90-year-old shredded to the bone.

The truth behind the posts

While some of these posts are legit and respectable, some of them are quite the opposite. Doing whatever they can to look better online. Here are a few examples:

For starters… steroids. Lying about drug injections is nothing new. But now, it is not just bodybuilders that abuse steroids.

Next, we have photo editing. Technology has become so advanced, that we can completely change how we look with just a simple phone app. Some people take this to the extreme. Taking hours to warp, edit lighting, and craft the perfect body.

Then there is the perfect pump timing. If you ever noticed you look a bit better in the gym, that’s because you have a “pump”. A pump is when you work out and blood rushes to the muscles you are working out. Making your muscles look more full and muscular. Some people only take photos when they have a pump.

Lastly, we have lighting. Have you ever noticed your body looks different in certain lighting? Many people use this to their advantage and take pics in the best lighting possible.

The Outcome

With all of these different ways to craft the perfect picture, you can now understand why you should take what you see online with a grain of salt.

Sometimes, you can’t blame people for finding great lighting or even getting a pump before a pic. We all want to look good.

But the next time you find yourself comparing your body to someone else's body on social media, just remember that there may be more going on behind the scenes.

Strive to become the best version of yourself. Not the best version of someone else.
